Camping From a Suitcase: Packing List

We knew we wanted to go camping in Acadia National Park, but we had a problem. We were flying. And, we don’t own those tiny, expensive tents and sleeping bags that backpackers have. After toying around with the idea for a while, we finally decided that it can still be done. We just needed to minimize our typical packing camping list. All our camping supplies needed to fit in one large checked bag. Don’t think it can be done? Check it out. Here is our “camping from a suitcase” packing list.

I should note that our suitcase weighed in at 48 pounds. 2 pounds less than than the airline requirement.

Camping Supplies

    • Tent – We use the 3-person Coleman Hooligan Tent.
    • Sleeping bag – Any sleeping bag will do, but remember Acadia can be chilly at night, even in the summer. So, bring a thick one.
    • Air mattress – It takes up less room than 2 foam mattress pads, and it is comfier. We like a queen, and yes, it fits in our tent with room to spare.
    • Hand Air Pump – For the air mattress. The camp site might not have electricity.
    • Fitted sheet I don’t like to sleep directly on the air mattress. And, we use our sleeping bag as a blanket instead of a bag.
    • Kettle – Gotta have something to heat up water for coffee, oatmeal, and rice/noodle dinners.
    • Hot mit – The kettle gets hot, hot, hot! I use an old kitchen one that is all stained up.
    • Cups
    • Freezer quart zip lock bags – Can cook oatmeal or rice in them and takes less room than a bowl. Really though, I just wanted to try it out. And, it works!
    • Utensils – You could use plastic, but I love my reusable bamboo ones.

  • Trash bags – You don’t want to leave your campsite trashy. Plus, these also come in handy for keeping firewood dry.
  • Matches – TSA doesn’t like you to pack lighter fluid in your checked bag.
  • Paper towels
  • Compact travel towels – You’ll need it when you take a shower, wash your face, etc., and you need it to dry quickly. Also takes up less room than a regular towel.
  • Head lamps – More convenient than a flashlight. Also, I highly recommend getting one with a red light setting.
  • Newspaper – Maybe you don’t need it, but I can’t start a fire without it.

Food (I also packed food in the suitcase because there was room)

  • Oatmeal
  • Instant coffee
  • Lipton rice sides
  • Instant noodle bowls

And that is all you need. Seriously. Happy Camping!
