What I Ate (and Drank) in Maine

When I think of Maine food, I think of lobster and blueberries. And, that pretty much sums up what we ate. Fresh lobster, lobster rolls (lots of them), lobster bisque… Fresh blueberries, wild blueberries, blueberry soda, blueberry pie. So, if you are planning a trip to Maine, hopefully you like lobster and blueberries. Here are our favorite Maine eats and drinks!

Best Maine Eats

What I Ate in Maine: Lobster

Whole Lobster

Thurston’s Lobster Pound (Bernard, ME)

When in Maine, you must eat a whole lobster. It is the law. And, Thurston’s is a legitimate local lobster restaurant. They have buckets of live lobsters right next to the cash register. You tell them what kind and size you want, then they help you pick one out. You get to meet it, make friends with it, and name it. Then they take it in the back and cook it! [Read blog post]

What I Ate in Maine: Blueberry Pie

Blueberry Pie

West Street Cafe (Bar Harbor, ME)

Pie is good. Who doesn’t like pie? Especially warm, bubbling pie full of wild Maine blueberries. This seems to be a staple in Maine, and you can find it almost every restaurant around. One of the bests was at the West Street Cafe in Bar Harbor because it was served warmed. You could even have it topped with vanilla ice cream.  [Read blog post]

What I Ate in Maine: Lobster Roll

Lobster Roll

Thurston’s Lobster Pound (Bernard, ME)

Don’t get me wrong, fresh whole lobster is great. But, there is one slight issue. You have to deal with eyes staring at you and guts dripping out. If that bothers you, the next best thing is a lobster roll. And, in Maine, it doesn’t have any fillers. Not even mayo. They just pile fresh lobster chucks on a roll. All the deliciousness without the mess! [Read blog here]

What I Ate in Maine: Wild Blueberries

Fresh Wild Blueberries

Roadside Stands (Anywhere, ME)

Don’t even think about buying blueberries from the grocery store. I looked  and they were more expensive and not even from Maine. Everywhere you drive in Maine, you will see little road side stands selling fresh wild blueberries. Stop and get a basket full.  They are tiny little things, but they are bursting with flavor. They also make an excellent snack for a car ride. [Read blog post]

What I Ate in Maine: Rococo Ice Cream

Artisanal Ice Cream

Rococo Ice Cream (Kennebunkport, ME)

Ice cream stores are generally good. There are very few that I haven’t liked. But, Rococo Ice Cream takes the cake. It is simply amazing. The flavors are incredible, and they let you try them all. Our favorites, and what we ordered, were Goat Cheese Blackberry Chambord and Persian Cake. The first tasted like a delicious blackberry cheesecake. The Persian cake flavor was filled with rose water, pistachios, and cardamom. Oh my gosh…so creative and so dang YUMMY. [Read blog post]

What I Ate in Maine: Lobster Bisque + Oyster Strips

Fried Whole-Body Clams + Lobster Bisque

West Street Cafe (Bar Harbor, ME)

Sometime we order a couple appetizers instead of an entree, so here we tried the fried whole-body clams and lobster bisque. Most people get clam chowder, but since we had that twice already, we opted for the lobster bisque. So creamy, so full of flavor. And, pair it with hot, crispy bites of clam. Delicious! [Read blog post]

Best Maine Drinks

What I Ate in Maine: Moxie

Moxie

Grocery Store (Anywhere, ME)

I’ve never had anything quite like Moxie before, but now I wish they sold it in Florida. Moxie is Maine’s official drink and is a very unique tasting soda. The best way I can describe it is a less sweetened version of root beer. And you know how much I love root beer. And if you didn’t know that, just scroll a little further down the page. What I Ate in Maine: Blueberry Soda

Old Soaker Blueberry Soda

Grocery Store/ Restaurant (Anywhere, ME)

We had fresh blueberries, blueberry pie, blueberry cake, etc., but we were missing a blueberry drink. Insert Old Soaker Blueberry Soda. I wouldn’t say it is my favorite drink in the world, but it something you should definately try while in Maine. The refreshing and sweet taste of blueberries with a little fizz. It is unique and quite delightful. [Read blog post]

What I Ate in Maine: Root Beer

Old Soaker Root Beer

Grocery Store/ Restaurant (Anywhere, ME)

I love root beer. I always have. It’s even made an appearance in numerous blog posts as you can see from here, here, here, and here to name a few. That being said, this was a unique opportunity to drink root beer. You see, the brand and namesake is Acadia’s Old Soaker which is a rock formation off the coast. While walking along the Ocean Trail, you can pop inside a gift shop, buy a root beer, and then drink the cold refreshing beverage while enjoying a view of Old Soaker.
